From time to time, “Playing In Quicksand” is going to be less a well thought out, coherent, single item collection and more a rambling discourse (hopefully still coherent) about any number for things. Hang on, here we go.
This past week at work I was involved in a “Lean” event. For the uninitiated, my employer subscribes to the practice of lean manufacturing, a process by which waste is driven out of a particular process and a more efficient and cost effective way of performing that particular task is put in place. I have been involved in lean with several different employers over the last fifteen years or so, and I am a believer in using lean principals as an organization to gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
All that said, these events really put me behind in my day to day stuff at work. So tomorrow promises to be a day for trying to see exactly how far behind I really am and figuring out how to catch up as quickly as possible. Wish me luck. I’m sure things will be fine, but sometimes being lucky is better than being good.
My daughters seem to be over their bout with pneumonia. They are back at school and even attended their school Halloween party on Saturday afternoon. It’s a pretty cool event for the kids. Local businesses donate treats and the kids go trick or treating around the inside of the school. They wind up in the gym for games and more treats. A very good time had by all.
I’m not the biggest fan of Halloween. As far
as I’m concerned, the perfect holiday is Thanksgiving. Think about it. It’s always on a Thursday so it never interferes with the weekend, I never have to work on Friday so it’s always a long weekend, the food is always great (added bonus if dinner is at my house and I get the leftovers), and it’s wall to wall football all weekend long. Like I said, perfection.
Back to Halloween, I’m not the biggest fan but the candy is a plus and the kids in their costumes, well what’s cuter than that. I’m a sucker for little kids doing cute and adorable things, and generally speaking, Halloween has more than it’s share of cute and adorable. I guess Halloween is alright……but it’s still no Thanksgiving.
There are moments as a parent when you become acutely aware that while your children may have many wonderful qualities, they may also have a few which are a bit less desirable. Such is the case with my four year old. While we
were on our way to grocery store on Saturday, my daughter says something about backward walking, an entire phrase that I’m pretty sure she must have picked up from one of the characters on one of her DVD’s, and repeated it, over and over and over until I was about ready to crack. To be fair, this verbal bludgeoning isn’t anything new. She talks non-stop from the time she wakes up in the morning until she is ready for bed at night. I guess I just thought she might outgrow this particular aspect of her identity, but alas, she has not.
She is an extremely adorable kid, if I do say so myself, and also has many great qualities that make her, ah, well, adorable. I guess I just find it amazing that she can carry on a conversation with anyone, anywhere, anytime, about anything, or just talk to no one in particular. Like she’s practicing for her next person to person moment. She’s truly an amazing little kid and I love her to death. Did I mention that she’s adorable?.?.?
Well, this is what I meant by rambling. Hopefully it was still coherent and mildly entertaining. I hope you all have a wonderful week, one of those sun on your face, wind at your back type weeks. And remember, don’t sweat the small stuff it’s all small stuff. Wish I would have thought of that saying first! Oh well.Time to go play in quicksand. Talk to you soon.
