It’s almost Halloween, a holiday I have previously stated I don’t care much for, except for the candy. Well, over here where we live, they do some pretty cool things for the kids.
Thursday night we went downtown to the ” Building For Kids” formerly the Appleton Childrens Museum. It’s part of the City Center which is an entire block of buildings tied together by a indoor atrium.
Admission was free and after entering, the kids got to play games on the first floor and third floor and go trick-or-treating through the museum on the second floor.
The games were all the everyone plays, everyone wins type with prizes ranging from small toys to rings and card games such as “Go Fish”.
What’s really nice is that it’s held indoors so the kids can wear their costumes without having to wear a winter coat or brave the elements. I’m not sure who sponsors this event but it appears to be an all volunteer army that mans the games, the trick-or-treating, admission, directions, and anything else that may come up.
They do a wonderful job and make sure that a good time is had by one and all. A very nice family event.
On Friday night, we took the girls to the “Haunted Woods” in Kimberly. This was, as the name implies, a woods that was decked out with all types of creepy and scary Halloween stuff.
The weather was pretty good for this time of year and the nice thing was that the first 30 minutes or so is dedicated to younger children, who can go through without the “active” scaring going on.
This was my daughters first experience with this type of Halloween entertainment and they had great time. Many thanks to the family who spent quite a few hours decorating the woods around their home for making my daughters first time through something like this such a positive experience.
And last but not least, I would be remiss in not acknowledging that this Sunday is Brett Favres return to Lambeau Field as a member of the Minnesota Vikings and giving my opinion on what has become as polarizing a subject as health care.
First let me say that in my opinion there is no place for the Packer fans who still want to see Brett do well. You need to pick one side of the fence or the other. There is no pigskin Switzerland.
In my opinion, while I find it troubling that Brett has decided to play for the Packers arch rival, what I find more troubling is the spitefulness of his reasoning and the deceit used to dupe an entire fan base.
Without chronicling the entire sordid affair from the beginning, most of the blame for this must lay at number 4’s feet. He couldn’t make up his mind if he wanted to play anymore or not and after repeated attempts to get him to come back, he decided to retire, for the first time. The press conference, the tears, the “I don’t have anything left to give speech”.
Then after the team made the only decision it could and decided to go with Aaron Rodgers, then he wants back in. Then the trade to New York, the horrible fade down the stretch last year which, in part, cost the Jets the playoffs, and the next retirement, which was followed by the team granting him his release.
This opened the doors for his move to Minnesota, a move that should have cost him the last little bit of good will he had left in Packerland. But, some Packer fans still were waiting for the prodigal son to show them a sign that deep down he was still one of them. Then on Thursday Lord Favre stated that the ‘09 Vikings are the most talented team he ’s ever been a part of.That comment even angered former teammates who still consider him a friend.
So, here’s what I hope happens on Sunday. I hope that those in attendance boo Brett with every bit of breath they have, everytime they get the chance. It’s really all that’s left to fans of the Green Bay Packers.
Also, winning the game would be the sweetest revenge. Then let it go. Let’s collectively move on and enjoy being Packer fans again.
We all know that Brett will be a first ballot hall of famer when his time really is done. He’ll probably go in as a Packer but given what’s happened in the last year or two, nothing would surprise me.
And if there really is a god, Brett Favre will one day be inducted into the Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame. One year AFTER Arron Rodgers!
